The 4190 solar panel system has an estimated annual output of 2030MWh (Megawatt hours), which is enough to power 310 average Australian households and reduce greenhouse pollution by more than 1,300 tonnes CO2e per annum.
“Casuarina Square is very proud to have Australia’s largest rooftop solar system right here in Darwin,’’ said centre manager Dean Young.
“It’s great that we’re part of a company that takes sustainability to the next level,’’ said Mr Young, noting the clean energy from the solar system would come at no extra cost to the GPT-owned centre’s tenants.
The system has already started providing around 20 per cent of Casuarina Square’s base building and common area electricity needs.
The solar installation has also been granted approval to connect to the electricity distribution network that provides power to residents and businesses in the Northern Territory.

“GPT has worked closely with our engineers to ensure the solar system successfully integrates with the power grid.”
The completion of the solar installation at Casuarina Square follows the commencement of construction works on the new alfresco dining and entertainment precinct at the shopping centre. Due to be completed in mid-2016, the new family-friendly precinct will include seven ‘First to Darwin’ leading eateries including Grill’d, Mad Mex and Max Brenner, a water feature, playground and an open-air public space.
